First Rays over Spouting Horn

6.25.07

The last morning in Kauai I rose early to try and shoot Spouting Horn on the south short, near our resort. In this particular spot the lithified cliffs were swiss cheesed by the ocean and created "Blow Holes" in the rock. The real Spouting Horn (photo tomorrow) is a smaller hole in the rock were the ocean shoots a huge plume of water every time the waves crash in. There used to be a larger spout (some 300 feet high), pictured here, but way back way some cane farmer was angry the salt water was stunting his crops (about 10 acres of hundreds) and ordered one of his whipping boys to throw some dynamite in the hole to widen it, and therefore stop the water from shooting so high in the air. What's left now is this huge hole where the ocean still spews mightily forth with every crashing wave, and in this shot, had some early light to help make the scene even more spectacular.
