The Loneliest Coconut

7.1.07

Sunrise, sunrise, sunrise. So many photos shot in Hawaii, yet the only ones I care to show tend to be ones shot between six and seven am. Coincidence? No such thing.

This post won't be so much about Hawaii, but more about current events.

As the year progresses and my health improves to the point of feeling better than "before", I still can't help but to compare this date, this year, to a similar time a year past. Today I'll simply compare today to yesterday. Today I'm sore - my legs can hardly make it up the stairs due to their stiffness. My quads scream anytime I try to move from sit to stand. My lips are a bit sunburned. My calves are mooing.

Yesterday I saw the sunrise. Yesterday my chicken legs carried me to the top of Mt. Yale, 14,000 feet of altitude - 4,300 feet over 3.5 miles on my own two feet. Then back. Quitting was never an option, though the experience was far from pleasant. But sitting on top of a 14,000 foot mountain with three of your closest friends with a handful of other hardy hikers is an experience not easily conveyed. Not with words. Not with pictures. It is simply an experience.

Tomorrow I go back to work, but not without a visit to Kathy the Acupuncturist and Inanna the Massage Therapist to help sooth my cantankerous legs.

Last year left as a distant memory.
